Government grant scheme for composting developments

The NSW Government is accepting grant applications for projects that help with organics processing. To be eligible the project must build, upgrade or expand organics processing infrastructure for source separated organics such as facilities that process kerbside food and garden organics into compost or convert food into animal feed or energy through anaerobic digestion.

The grants range from $25,000 up to a cool $2 million, with the total pool of over $6 million in total. The scheme is part of the NSW Government’s Waste Less Recycle More initiative.

Rotting food that makes its way into the landfill will eventually decompose and cause the release of the greenhouse gas methane. Recycling this food into usable goods instead of letting it enter the landfill is a primary concern of the funding scheme; ideally the amount of organic waste that enters the landfill can be halved by 2030 thereby reaching net zero emissions from organic waste.

Previous grant rounds have seen over $46 million allocated to over 100 projects, the results of which include the ability to process an additional 500,000 tonnes of source separated organics waste per year.

Grant applications are open until 5 pm, 21 October. Click here for more information, including the application form.
