5 Ways to Support Veganuary Through Your Hair Care Routine

Launched in 2014, Veganuary is a global challenge encouraging people to go vegan by trying out this lifestyle for the month of January. Meat and dairy production are known for negative environmental impacts, with around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions being produced by these industries.

While many focus on transitioning to a vegan diet, the point of Veganuary is to embrace a vegan lifestyle for the full month – and that includes ‘veganizing’ your hair care. Here are some ideas on how you can support Veganuary not only through choosing a meat-free and dairy-free eating habit, but also by changing to a cruelty-free hair care routine.

Check what’s on your shelves

This is the most obvious—but very important—first step. It’s impossible to make a lifestyle change without changing the brands you use, particularly if you’re embracing a fully plant-based lifestyle. Currently, there are many brands that care for our planet as well as your beauty, using only natural, vegan ingredients. Vegan hair care brand Mayraki Professional combines advanced scientific data with the knowledge of herbalists and chemists to produce a range of cruelty-free hair care products that are 100% vegan and contain no parabens, sulfates, or silicones.

Try homemade beauty recipes

Using natural ingredients for your hair has been a common practice for centuries. Get creative with what you have at home and dedicate an evening to beauty rituals and an at-home spa experience. Coconut and olive oils can be a base ingredient for a facial mask, with such additions as banana, avocado, or even oatmeal for different types of hair.

Use a vegan brush

Often overlooked, brushing is such an essential part of your hair care routine. Not all brushes are equal—ahem, vegan—as many of them use boar bristles or other non-vegan components. Brushing your hair daily is important, so it’s worth investing in a high-quality vegan brush that not only cares for the scalp and locks, but is also good for the planet.

Perform a scalp massage regularly

A necessary self-care routine to perform daily. Using either your fingertips or a vegan brush, this is the greatest technique to increase blood flow in the scalp area, therefore stimulating hair growth. Other effects of regular scalp massage include thicker and healthier hair.

Choose organic bath towels

Classic cotton towels and are often bulky and unsustainable. Cotton uses 3% of the earth’s water, and cotton farming  costs $83 billion in damages. Choose certified organic cotton towels from brands such as Coyuchi (US), Pact (US), and Bhumi (Australia) as these are more environmentally-friendly and responsibly made in a fair-trade factory and unlike synthetic towels made from microfiber and polyester, don’t unleash microplastics into our waterways and oceans when laundered.
