Evolution of Democracy

When one hears of that Tongass National Forest in Alaska, the planet’s largest intact temperate rainforest, protected till now, is being opened by Trump for corporate exploitation. Or that his Southern neighbour Bolsonaro is single handedly responsible for rapidly accelerating deforestation in the Amazon and being the cause of the worst wildfires in the Pantanal region in South America. Equally from Europe, Merkel’s and Morawiecki’s thirst for Coal and Diesel industry hasn’t diminished.

And then complete lack of opposition and silence of these democracies to China's unchecked advance on the path of global environmental destruction.

One waits for the visions of the present Political Leaders. Unfortunately, the conclusion seems evident that democracies are failing to resolve these issues.

It makes one wonder, whether the present form of Democracy as being practiced in most of the countries can answer these issues or will Humanity have to find new governing forms to avert itself from the forthcoming disasters.

    • Thank Ben for sharing with us your interesting analysis.

Honestly, I think the issue is not about the governing forms but the actions of Leaders. They should make decisions with the aim to find the balance between economic development and conversation of biodiversity.

Moreover, before accusing the Leaders, we should think about our own lifestyle. Do we always act to preserve the environment? I strongly believe small daily choices in everyday life can make difference in our run to have a better planet.

      • Dear Rossella.

        Thank you for your comment.

I would still disagree. It has indeed lots to do with the form of the government. We live in a Shareholder Democracy, where the major Corporations and Lobbyiest influence the policies and even though one 'good' Leader might try, he or she will not make any difference to the system.

We have to change our Lifestyle indeed, but if a government makes a policy that is far more effective. For example, one policy, like Trump opening the Alaskan rainforest for industrial exploitation will do more damage than tens of millions of people like you and me never ever driving a car.

In conclusion, the article was about whether the present form of democracy being practiced can resolve the present crises. And with each passing day, I think of Not.
