A Mother’s Day Gift Guide for the sustainable shoppers & eco-friendly lovin’ Mamas. This is one of my favorite holidays because there are so many moms in my life I love to celebrate - I hope this gift guide comes in handy for yours :)
WHAT MAKES A GIFT SUSTAINABLE?
We look for several things when deciding if a product should be listed in one of our Sustainable Gift Guides. 1) What is the gift made out of? The gift we add must be made from eco-friendly materials that are easy on the planet. 2) Who made the gift? The maker behind the item is just as important and should be compensated fairly for their time. 3) Does the brand implement sustainability within its entire business? We don’t want surface-level eco-friendly products; we want brands who genuinely care about sustainability and enforce it throughout their business wherever they can - from shipping to giving back. 4) Is the gift practical & something they can use for many years? We’ve all been given gifts we could have done without, but we find every gift we add to these lists are practical and going to be loved for a very long time.
Besides gifting one of these beautiful, sustainably-made goods, we also encourage shopping secondhand or gifting experiences. For example, there are many vases ready to find a new home at a thrift store you can fill with local florals!

1) Mama-Friendly Handmade Jewelry

I absolutely love Laura Elizabeth’s collection of necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings. And for all the mamas out there with babies and toddlers, Laura even has a collection of non-toxic, durable, and “tuggable” jewelry that is not only safe for little ones to put in their mouth, but also sturdy enough for you to wear and not worry about it breaking. Everything is made by hand in Los Angeles out of recycled metals, and some of her pieces are even made using real plants!

2) The Convertible Tote

This socially responsible brand creates beautiful bags in small batches, all of which are handmade by artisans in Guatemala and support sustainable livelihoods. Made from high-quality, full-grain leather, this convertible tote has two button closures—one to close the bag horizontally and another vertically to bring the sides in giving more security and also creating a different shape. It also includes a detachable zip pocket, tether, and slip pocket along with an adjustable cross-body strap so the mom in your life can wear and use it several different ways!

A beautiful candle is ALWAYS a good gift idea, and Prosperity Candle is one of my absolute favorite brands for candles that not only smell great but also look beautiful in any room and are safe to burn.
Their Marbella candle holder can be transformed into an elegant planter pot or other decorative piece once the candle is finished.
Each candle is hand-poured by a woman artisan and former refugee who is building a brighter future for herself and her family.
They use all-natural soy and coconut waxes, pure cotton and wood wicks, and premium fragrances.

Moms always need new tote bags… I know I am always wearing mine out, lugging all of Elliott’s stuff around all the time!
I adore MZ’s collection of handbags, all of which are ethically and transparently handmade by master Zapotec artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico. In addition, they use natural and locally sourced materials like wool, cotton, and leather.
MZ is also a Certified B Corp and accredited Fair Trade by the Fair Trade Federation.

10) Sustainable Flowers
According to this article in ideas.ted.com, flowers are annually a 55-billion-dollar industry in the USA. Most of the flowers we buy don’t come from the USA, most come from Columbia, and the environmental impact of growing and transporting them is much greater than we realized - and exposure to toxic chemicals for labor in the floral agriculture industry is high!
