Sustainable Brands for Kids (+Affordable Clothing)

Are you looking for ethical children’s clothing that won’t break the bank? We’ve compiled a list of organic childrenswear brands with excellent quality at accessible price points because we know kids grow too fast to be spending lots of money! Some of the brands may be a little higher in price, but well worth it. Also, make sure to keep your eyes open for their yearly sales!

how to find sustainable clothing for kids when on a budget

As a mother myself, spending more than $30 on a t-shirt is something I don’t want to make a habit of doing when my son is growing like a weed. However, if I am purchasing a new garment for him (we are 80% secondhand), I do want to at least pay a fair price and stay away from Target’s adorable kids section and their $5 tees.

As a reference point, I’ve indicated the price of a t-shirt for all of these brands to make it easier for you parents.

If over $15 is too much for you to spend on a new t-shirt, I would highly suggest signing up for the brand’s newsletters. This way, you can out when they are having sales!

As always, these brands listed here use ethical business practices within their supply chain, and eco-friendly materials to care for the planet and your child’s health.

What types of eco-friendly fabrics should we choose for our kids?

Organic cotton is one of my favorites when shopping for my toddler. He likes to be comfortable, and nothing wears and washes better than cotton. We choose organic over conventional for many reasons and you can learn about them in this post here. Of course, any natural fiber made without toxic dyes should be safe and healthy for your kids!

p.s. While there are a handful more of organic children’s brands, I can’t find enough information on their manufacturing and some have mark downs lower than $10, which makes me rather suspicious. If you are wanting to responsibly pay those prices, your best bet is second-hand shopping. I love shopping for Elliott at Once Upon a Child. I can purchase t-shirts for $2.99 and pants for $5.99. While it’s hard to go in with something specific in mind (I feel like you never find it when you do, hah), it really is one of the best ways to shop for kids. BUT, I think supporting small sustainable fashion brands is wonderful for the industry, and these 11 kid brands are a great start for that!

Our Top Picks for Sustainable Kid’s Clothing brands:

1) Borobabi

Boys & Girls, Newborn to 6 Years

T-Shirt | From $2.99

The worst part about buying kids clothing is how fast they grow out of them! That’s why I love Borobabi’s model. They curate several pieces of (sustainable) clothing for your little one, & you get to decide which you want to buy, rent, or return. Borobabi’s curation services comes with a special touch because it’s done by a team of real mom stylists all based across the U.S! You can read more about Borobabi here.

7) Ten Little

Boys & Girls Sizes 4-13

Shoes | $39+

I won’t spend more than $45 on shoes for Elliott. I think a lot of people might look at that as a high number, but I buy him a pair he can wear everyday - not one for every outfit. We love his Ten Littles! The 100% cotton lining is combined with a vegan leather upper which is PVC & phthalate-free. The outsoles are made with natural rubber from the milk of the Hevea tree & the insoles include recycled rubber. Also, they are pediatrician approved!

8) The Good Tee

Boys & Girls Ages 0-14

T-Shirt | $22

This is a relatively new brand that is about as transparent as they come. I actually did my first True Cost Series featuring their tee, which shows you exactly why a fair trade organic tee costs more than the average conventional cotton tee. Besides their adult t-shirt line, they have a few adorable onesies and t-shirts for your little ones. I personally love their tees so I know these must be great, too!

Tentree’s “earth-first” apparel is made ethically out of eco-conscious fabrics like organic cotton, recycled polyester, TENCEL, and hemp. We love their adult collection on Sustainably Chic, and think their kiddo collection is too cute.
